A live-action Warcraft motion picture is under development.

In a May 9, 2006 press release, Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures (makers of Batman Begins and 300) announced that they will develop a live-action film set in the Warcraft universe. Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights for the game universe, and both companies are now focused on translating the Warcraft experience to the big screen. The live-action film is set for release in 2009.

Plot
The film was originally set in the era of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. This was scrapped however, as there were notions that it would be too similar to Lord of the Rings and that Warcraft had reached its current level of popularity through its MMO, rather than the previous RTS games.

As such, the movie is set one year before World of Warcraft and will primarily told from the Alliance's POV, though Metzen says his heart lies with the Horde. Characters such as Cairne Bloodhoof, Thrall and Bolvar Fordragon are likely to make appearances. Arthas is unlikely to appear. The main character is set to be a new hero described as a "kick-ass Human" . Interestingly enough, the film is described as the "first film," raising obvious possibilities as to future installments.

Concept art of Teldrassil was released in relation to the film, confirming at least some of the film takes place in Darnassus.

THE DARK KNIGHT

The Dark Knight is an upcoming 2008 American superhero film based on the fictional DC Comics character Batman. The film is a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, which rebooted the Batman film series after an eight-year hiatus. Christopher Nolan returns as the director, and Christian Bale reprises the lead role. Batman's primary conflicts in the film come from his fight against the Joker (Heath Ledger) and his strained friendship with district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).

Nolan took inspiration from the Joker's first two appearances in the comics, and like the first film, Batman: The Long Halloween was a major influence on the story. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago (as was Batman Begins), as well as several other locations in and outside the United States. The director used an IMAX camera to film four major action sequences, including the Joker's first appearance in the film. The Batsuit was redesigned, with a cowl allowing Bale to move his head. A recreation of the Batcycle, known as the Batpod, will be introduced.

Warner Bros. created an aggressive viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing several dozen websites revealing details of the film, such as screenshots, as a reward for collaboration among Batman fans. This led to some press attention concerning how its campaign might be altered by Ledger's death on January 22, 2008, since the Joker had been a chief promotional focus. Other marketing ventures include a new toy line as well as an animated direct-to-DVD anthology titled Batman: Gotham Knight that is set between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The film will be released on July 17, 2008 in Australia, on July 18, 2008 in North America, and on July 25, 2008 in the United Kingdom.

The film is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Mike Newell (of the Goblet of Fire fame). An early draft of the script was written by Jordan Mechner, the creator of the Prince of Persia franchise. According to the film-makers, the film will not be a "beat-for-beat" adaptation, but will combine some "cool" elements from the game to create a "totally new experience" for the viewers. There is currently some speculation that, like the three games (of The Sands of Time trilogy), the film will feature parkour scenes. An early script was reportedly reviewed by two individual sites, but the authenticity of this script has not been confirmed.

Jake Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince of the 6th century Persia, who must join forces with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
